Constipation is a condition in which there are less than three bowel movements per week. It can also be associated with straining to have bowel movements or passing stools that are small, hard, and dry. Further, people suffering from constipation may also experience bloating or abdominal discomfort. Try the following methods to manage and cure constipation.

Increase physical activity

Physical activity helps to keep your body agile and flexible. It also reduces stress and provides relief from the symptoms of constipation. Exercises like walking and yoga or relaxation techniques like meditation, massage and tai chi are helpful.

Keep a symptom diary

It is common to suffer from abdominal pain or constipation which occur as a result of certain triggers. Very often these triggers are stressful events or certain foods. Maintaining a symptom diary is the best thing you can do to identify these triggers. This can help you to avoid such foods or events.

Eat fibre-rich foods

Dietary fiber aids in fighting constipation by bulking up the stool and pulling more water into it. This makes it easier to pass the stool. Include fibre-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, peas, beans and whole grains in your daily diet.

Drink enough water

Dehydration is one of the most common causes of constipation. Water is important both for healthy digestion and a healthy intestine. When your body is dehydrated, the large intestine takes in water from your food waste, thereby making stools hard and difficult to pass. Remember to drink eight cups of water everyday.

Opt for over-the-counter treatments

Over-the-counter treatments like laxatives and stool softeners are only suitable for occasional constipation. Consult your healthcare provider before starting an over-the-counter treatment and take medications if your symptoms persist.

If you suffer from chronic constipation, be sure to talk to your healthcare provider.
