Fight Common Cold Naturally

Stuffed up sinuses, runny nose, sore throat, constant coughing and headaches can ruin your day when you catch the common cold virus. Try the following home remedies which offer good relief from these symptoms of cold.

Garlic

The antibacterial and antiviral properties of garlic aid in getting rid of the symptoms of cold. Mix together one crushed garlic clove, two teaspoons of lemon juice, one teaspoon of honey, and half a teaspoon of cayenne pepper or red chilly powder and consume everyday till the symptoms subside. You could also boil four to five chopped garlic cloves in a cup of water. Add one teaspoon of honey to it and drink two to three times a day.

Honey

Use honey to soothe your throat and get faster relief from cold. Consume a mixture of one teaspoon of lemon juice and two teaspoons of honey for every two hours till you get some relief. You could also opt to simply swallow a spoonful of raw honey.

Spice Tea

Take the help of an ayurvedic spice tea to banish common cold. Dry roast and grind a quarter cup of coriander seeds, one and a half tablespoons each of cumin and fennel seeds, and a quarter teaspoon of fenugreek seeds. Boil a cup of water and add one and a half tablespoons each of the spice powder and rock candy to it. Simmer for three minutes and add two tablespoons of milk. Boil the solution, strain and sip it slowly while it is still hot. Drink everyday to get relief from cold.

Ginger

Fight the symptoms of common cold with the antiviral and anti inflammatory properties of ginger. Eat raw ginger, or drink ginger tea with a dash of lemon juice and honey four to five times a day. To get rid of a runny nose, mix equal amounts of dry ginger powder, clarified butter and jaggery. Consume everyday in the morning on an empty stomach.

Chicken Soup

A healthy homemade chicken soup with organic ingredients is one of your best bets to get a speedy relief from cold. In addition to eliminating the symptoms of cold, chicken soup also helps in boosting immunity and restoring strength to your tired body.

Red Onion

A syrup made from red onion is another great home remedy to treat common cold. To make the syrup, slice two to three red onions horizontally. Put one slice of onion in a bowl and add raw honey. Repeat the process until the bowl is full. Cover the bowl and set aside for 12 to 15 hours till you get a thick liquid like syrup. Drink a spoonful of the syrup several times a day to get comfort from the symptoms of cold.

Pepper

The capsaicin present in pepper makes it one of the best natural ingredients to help alleviate the symptoms of common cold. Capsaicin aids in thinning the mucus and thereby provides relief from congestion. To get rid of a runny nose, put pepper in your food or gargle with pepper mixed in a glass of warm water.

Mullein Tea

A hot cup of mullein tea can provide relief from chest congestion due to its expectorant properties. Make mullein tea by filling a strainer with dried mullein herb. Place the strainer in a cup of boiling water for about ten minutes. Add honey to the tea and drink two to three times a day.

Milk

Milk, turmeric powder and ginger powder work well against the cough and headache associated with common cold. Boil milk and add one and a half teaspoons of turmeric powder and one and a half tablespoons of ginger powder. Bring the milk down to room temperature and drink twice a day especially before going to bed.

Cinnamon

Make use of the aromatic spice cinnamon to get relief from dry or sore throat. Mix a tablespoon of powdered cinnamon and two cloves in a glass of boiling water and allow it to simmer for fifteen minutes. Strain, add some honey and drink while it is still warm. Do this one to three times a day.
